CNC Mill
A CNC mill is a machine used to engrave or carve patterns Into hard materials such as metal. At the innovation center, they have a Tormach PCNC 440 mill. I learned a little bit about how the size of the bit effects how the machine works. With a wider bit, it covers more surface area, but cannot go as deep, and with a thin bit it can mill very deeply, but doing large areas takes a while. I also learned about the process that you use to create a part with the mill. first you create it in Autodesk inventor, then you export it to fusion 360, and finally, through fusion 360, it begins printing. A third thing that I learned Is what type of material a CNC mill works best with. CNC mills work best with hard material, like metal, and don't work on softer material like plastic, wood or foam. You use Fusion 360 to set up the part before it is milled. Fusion 360 creates the best path for the drill to take in order to efficiently engrave the part. If I could create something in a CNC mill, I would probably create a pencil holder for my desk. Overall, I learned a lot about CNC mills and how they work and what they do.
I would create something simple like this, but out of metal instead of wood.
